Kids

Fire Mountain is a most wonderful environment to "put kids in" for incredible experiences as long as you the parent(s) are into spending quality time with your children and that means being active and outdoors with them. There are many forms of entertainment and experiences at Fire Mountain for you to experience with your kids that involve wildlife and nature in our spectacular setting. When you check in at Guest Services and Reception simply ask the staff person that greets you to acclimate you and your kids to all the options available at Fire Mountain for all of you to participate in during your visit. There are also "rainy day" options as well.

If you desire "organized and supervised activities" there are several options for kids here in the Southern Highlands and they are all excellent but only offered during the High Season months of June through October.

Go a little wild this summer with Highlands Youth Adventures. They provide outdoor adventure "day trips" for children ages 9 - 13. Each day is a different adventure such as whitewater rafting, rappelling and a high ropes course, tubing, mountain biking, water/amusement parks, canoeing or mountain biking. Trail lunch, snacks, beverages, equipment, transportation and instruction are provided. Fun and constructive activities kids can do during the day with other kids, but still be with their families at night. Absolutely wonderful.

The Nature Center is maintained by the Highlands Biological Station as a public educational facility that emphasizes the natural heritage of the Southern Appalachians. The Nature Center maintains educational exhibits that interpret for the public the rich biodiversity of the Highlands area. Classes for children are taught by qualified staff members throughout the summer. Each class encourages students to learn about nature through hands-on activities and short area hikes. Highlands Nature Center is a member of the University of North Carolina, administered by Western Carolina University.

The Highlands Playhouse is now in its 65th year of presenting outstanding summer theater. In 1973 the playhouse began to employ professional actors and staff. Now the playhouse features members of Actor's Equity Association, the highest level of professional actors in the U.S. Casting is done primarily out of New York City, Atlanta, and the Southeastern Theatre Conference. The Highlands Playhouse has outstanding Summer Theatre Classes for Children taught by professional actors. The courses run two weeks each and are for ages 6 - 12 and for ages 13 - 18.

Some couples desire a getaway for romance and quality time together without the kids. Some couples desire to getaway with their entire family or certain members of their families. As an example we have a number of father/sons and mother/daughters that come for fly fishing each year. Therefore families with children and young adults are welcome in Cabins. Families with young adults are welcome in the Inn and the Treehouses of the Inn.

Kids at Fire Mountain are cool when they have a great time with their families. Kids at Fire Mountain are cool when they respect the physical and natural environment. Kids at Fire Mountain are cool when they respect their families, each other and the other guests. As a result harmony exists for all who are guests at Fire Mountain!
